Reinforcing bars are essential for concrete structures such as buildings and bridges. While it would be ideal for the rebar to be continuous and unbroken, splicing of rebar is essential.
Reinforced concrete structures form a strong structural system through the complementary interaction between concrete (the muscles of the structure) and rebar (the skeleton), enabling them to protect lives and property from earthquakes and natural disasters. This is made possible thanks to protection provided by the system.
However, the excessive use of low-quality products for rebar splicing — which plays a role comparable to bones in the human body — has significantly threatened the safety of structures. On December 30, 2024, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (KDS) revised the “Design Standards (KDS)” to restrict the use of products that do not meet quality requirements.
A Grade-1 rebar coupler refers to a product that, although joining two rebars, maintains performance equivalent to unspliced rebar. Such couplers can be installed at any splice location (full-length splicing) for all structures, including large-scale concrete structures.
